Why Use Alloy Instead of Promtail

Promtail reached end of life (EOL) on 2026-03-02 and no longer receives ongoing maintenance, fixes, or version compatibility updates.

Continuing to use Promtail increases compatibility and maintenance risks when upgrading systems, dependencies, or the logging pipeline. Therefore:

  • Use Grafana Alloy to collect MongoDB logs in new environments.
  • Existing Promtail deployments can continue running, but should be migrated to Alloy according to a plan.
  • Promtail deployment documentation is intended for maintaining existing environments and is not recommended for new deployments.

Grafana Alloy is an actively maintained collector that supports the previous Promtail workflow for collecting and processing file logs and writing them to VictoriaLogs. Existing MongoDB log rotation and VictoriaLogs ingestion methods can be retained after migration.
